The National Rugby League (NRL) is the top league of professional rugby league football clubs in Australasia, run by the Australian Rugby League Commission. The competition is known as the Telstra Premiership due to sponsorship from Telstra Corporation and is contested by sixteen teams, fifteen of which are based in Australia with one based in New Zealand. It is regarded as the world’s elite rugby league championship and, per season, is the single most viewed and attended rugby football competition in the world.

The National Rugby League is the present-day embodiment of Australia’s top-level domestic club competition, which in turn grew from Sydney’s club competition, and which has been running continuously since 1908. The NRL formed in the aftermath of the 1990s’ Super League war as a joint partnership between the sport’s already-existing national governing body, the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and media giant News Corporation-controlled Super League,after both organisations ran premierships parallel to each other in 1997.This partnership was dissolved in February 2012, with control of the NRL going to the independently-formed Australian Rugby League Commission.

NRL matches are played in Australia and New Zealand from autumn until spring. The season culminates in the premiership-deciding game, the NRL Grand Final, traditionally one of Sydney’s most popular sporting events and one of the largest attended rugby league club championship events .In addition, the NRL premiers also play in the World Club Challenge, a pre-season match against the champions of the European Super League competition.

2013 NRL season:
The 2013 NRL season will be the 107th season of professional rugby league’s club competition in Australia. The main competition is being contested by National Rugby League teams. The season will start with the 2013 NRL All Stars match played in the pre-season period (February) and will culminate in the 2013 NRL Grand Final on October 6. The 2013 Holden Cup, an under-20 competition, also takes place alongside the Premiership, with most matches held prior to the first grade competition.

It’s been four-and-a-half months since any competitive rugby league has been played on Australian soil. The wait will be over this Saturday night.

The NRL All-Stars go head to head with the Indigenous All-Stars in the annual All Stars Match, a match which serves as the main prelude to the upcoming NRL season.

After three years on the Gold Coast, this year’s match has been transferred to Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, where further damage was avoided despite the floods that have engulfed Brisbane recently.

After the Indigenous boys took out the inaugural match in 2010, the NRL All-Stars have had bragging rights as of recent, winning in 2011 and last year.

This will be the first official rugby league match played in Australia in the post-David Gallop era. And here’s hoping the new era of rugby league in Australia will be a relatively controversy-free one, after the salary cap controversies involving the Bulldogs and the Melbourne Storm in the last decade, the Brett Stewart saga in 2009 and Sonny Bill Williams dramatically leaving Belmore in 2008.

The NRL All-Stars backline is one of the strongest I have seen in recent years. The Morris brothers, a former Dally M Medallist and two dangerous back men in Akuila Uate and Shaun Kenny-Dowall, who shared the top try-scoring honours in 2010.

Benji Marshall and Adam Reynolds should form a dangerous halves pairing, though this will be Reynolds’ first representation in the All-Stars match and his first match since a hamstring injury destroyed the Rabbitohs’ dreams of advancing to the grand final last September.

Paul Gallen, one of the hardest workers in rugby league, locks a scrum behind a forward pack which features James Tamou, Ben Hannant and Ashley Harrison, all of whom have been represented in State of Origin.

Their interchange bench features key players, such as Robbie Farah, David Shilligton, Kieran Foran and Shaun Johnson. This is a very good side the fans have assembled.

The Indigenous All-Stars backline is headed by no other than last year’s Dally M Medallist, Ben Barba. He is being talked up for a possible State of Origin debut for Queensland this season, so this is his chance to prove that he can perform in big matches.

Greg Inglis won’t be out of position in the centres, where he learnt his trade at Melbourne before last year’s sensational switch to fullback sparked the Rabbitohs’ best season since 1989.

Johnathan Thurston and Scott Prince have proven to be a successful halves pairing before, as evidenced in the 2008 State of Origin series when they played two matches together for two wins.

However their forward pack isn’t as strong, even though Greg Bird is the key player in the second row. Travis Waddell, who is being pursued by the Newcastle Knights, will have a hard time marking All-Stars hooker Cameron Smith.

Timana Tahu will be an impact off the bench, so whenever Greg Inglis or Justin Hodges need to be rested during the match, Tahu can take their place and wreak some havoc on the field.

On paper, the All-Stars have the stronger team, but the Indigenous All-Stars should not be counted out, especially when you consider it features Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston and Justin Hodges, all of whom have featured prominently during Queensland’s endless State of Origin dominance.

Also this will be Ben Barba’s chance to prove that he can play with these three players in the same side, because he won’t get an opportunity to play in the same side as them unless he is picked for Queensland for this year’s Origin.

The two backlines are evenly matched, but I think the All-Stars forward pack is much stronger given it features both of the Origin captains (Smith and Gallen), as well as the most explosive prop in the game today (James Tamou). Also the All-Stars interchange features players that have played in the big time before, and will expect to do so in this match.

Prediction: All-Stars by 12 points.

MISSING IN ACTION:
Canterbury coach Des Hasler has had the luxury of naming an unchanged squad to the one that took care of Manly in the qualifying final a fortnight ago. With the benefit of a week’s rest, the Bulldogs players will have been able to treat any niggling problems and should be well rested.

The Rabbitohs welcome back winger Nathan Merritt after the veteran flyer missed last weekend’s win over Canberra with a shoulder injury. Merritt will play in his 200th NRL game. His inclusion means Justin Hunt drops back to an extended bench alongside Jason Clark (ankle), who is also eligible again after injury.

FORM:
The Bulldogs had their feet up last weekend and would have needed the break after a bruising win over the Sea Eagles in the first week of the finals. Not only have Canterbury won 14 of their last 15 matches, they also boast 11 wins from their last 14 at ANZ and have come out on top in six of their last eight clashes against South Sydney.

Michael Maguire’s troops kept their season alive – and emphatically shot down any suggestions of semi-final stage fright – with their 38-16 dismantling of the Raiders last Saturday night. It was typical South Sydney. Blow their opponents away with a devastating spell, clock off and allow them back into the game, before regrouping, finding a second wind and racking up a big score. It’s great when it’s enough to win but a repeat won’t be good enough against the Bulldogs.

The Storm and Sea Eagles have a heated recent rivalry stemming from numerous finals encounters and an infamous night at Brookvale Oval. They may not like each other, but their intense rivalry is built out of mutual respect. All across the park Manly and Melbourne square-off in mini-battles that demonstrate the highest quality of rugby league. It is easy to point out the danger men, but stopping them has proven quite difficult this season.

Billy Slater vs Brett Stewart:
Slater has been mentioned amongst the greatest fullbacks of all time; it wasn’t that long ago that he was going head-to-head with Stewart to make the Australian team. Who knows what could have happened if Stewart hadn’t missed the best part of two seasons through injury. Both players are instrumental to their team’s success; they are try-scoring machines who constantly have the defence on edge. But more than that, they control the game from the back, and are dependable and secure. Slater’s speed is electric and he creates space by constantly putting the defence in two minds. Stewart has lost a yard of pace, but his timing is impeccable, and he is always on the spot to make the most of any half breaks.

Cooper Cronk vs Daly Cherry-Evans:
Cronk is arguably the most professional and well-drilled halfback of the modern era, while Cherry-Evans, in only his second season, has exploded onto the scene showing poise and composure beyond his years. Both players have excellent kicking and passing skills, and both will put their body on the line when defending. They are tough and uncompromising in their pursuit of victory. Cronk will lead his team around the park, controlling the tempo and looking to establish his side’s structure early. Look for Melbourne to have a special set-play for the final with Cronk playing on the inside to either Cam Smith or Billy Slater. Cherry-Evans also likes to control the speed of the game and is not afraid to take on the line and withstand heavy tackling in the process. Manly will use a sweeping play starting with Cherry-Evans and involving Glenn Stewart, Jamie Lyon and Brett Stewart.

MISSING IN ACTION: Jamie Lyon looks to have overcome a calf injury and is a near certainty to play. Steve Matai is serving one of his regular bans and has played his last game for the year unless Manly win. The reliable Dean Whare shifts from wing to centre as cover with Michael Oldfield brought in on the flank. Cowboys hooker Aaron Payne (knee) is a doubtful starter, with Anthony Mitchell on stand-by.

FORM: North Queensland haven’t lost since Manly edged them 8-6 back in Round 22. That’s five straight wins. They were super impressive in seeing off Brisbane in the first week of the finals but, to be honest, the Broncos aren’t much of a yardstick. This is a much bigger test, especially given the Cowboys’ appalling form in the Harbour City. Turn away now if you support Neil Henry’s men because it makes for ugly reading: North Queensland have played 112 games in Sydney for 33 wins (success rate 29 percent). They have won just four of their past 25 matches since 2008 and only one of their past 10 in the NSW capital. Records are meant to be broken but that one needs a sledgehammer to crack it open. Manly’s six-match winning run came to an end last week at the hands of Canterbury. It was enough for many critics to write them off but not this one. There were only six points in it and if Matai hadn’t super glued the ball to his hands, the Sea Eagles may have scored a late try to lock it all up. They love playing at Moore Park and have beaten the Cowboys in six of their of past eight meetings

How quickly the tables can turn. It was barely two months ago that Canberra coach David Furner was facing another barrage of speculation about his job security, with the Raiders struggling to find any sort of consistency and languishing in 13th spot on the NRL ladder.

At that stage a finals berth seemed little more than a pipe dream, yet so stunningly have they turned their season around that they head into week two of the finals as one of the form teams of the competition and with a real chance of booking a grand final qualifier against Canterbury. (Let’s not forget, should that happen, that Canberra is the only side since Round 10 to defeat the Bulldogs with a shock 34-6 thrashing three weeks ago.)

The Raiders’ resurgence has been all about going back to basics. Having cut their error rate to the lowest in the NRL, they use their monstrous front row to power the side forward before unleashing a backline jam-packed with both size and speed. They started slow against Cronulla last Sunday and paid the price early on, but when they got it right in the second half they proved far too much to handle, with four snappy tries in the final 14 minutes.

While Canberra rides high on the back of their six-game winning streak, questions are suddenly being asked of South Sydney’s premiership credentials despite their impressive third-place finish after the regular season.

Playing their first finals series in five years and just their second since 1989, Souths appeared to be Rabbits in the headlights as Melbourne raced to an 18-0 half-time lead before cruising to a 24-6 victory.

To be fair, it’s probably harsh to jump to such conclusions given that the bunnies have been in or around the top four for most of the season. And of course, Melbourne in Melbourne has long been one of the NRL’s toughest road trips.

Also, Canberra will no doubt recognise that South Sydney have far more weapons to throw at them than Cronulla with Greg Inglis, Dave Taylor and John Sutton all key game-breakers.

Nevertheless, it is up to the home side to prove that their lack of finals experience won’t be a burden.

A broken arm suffered by Matt King last week has seen him ruled out for the season with Andrew Everingham filling his centre spot and Justin Hunt coming in on the wing. Shaune Corrigan has been added to an extended bench.

Canberra have also lost a centre with Jarrod Croker suffering a fractured cheekbone against the Sharks. Joel Thompson moves into the backline in Croker’s place with Joe Picker coming into the starting side in the second row.

Rookie Jack Wighton moves onto a seven-man bench alongside Travis Waddell, Jarrad Kennedy and Dimitri Pelo.

It will be a big night for veteran Souths duo Nathan Merritt and Michael Crocker who will both play their 200th NRL game this week. No doubt both will be hoping history repeats, too: the last time Souths played on September 15 they won the 1928 premiership!

Worryingly, though, will be the fact that they have been held to a single try in three of their past five games while Canberra will come in with plenty of confidence given that they are enjoying their best away season in a decade with seven wins and five losses.

Canberra bookends David Shillington and Dane Tilse are both playing their 150th NRL game.

It will be interesting to see who coach David Furner chooses to fill Jarrod Croker’s goal-kicking boots with Josh Dugan, Blake Ferguson and Sam Williams all in the mix. Their respective records through both NRL and NYC are: Dugan 112 from 163, Ferguson 4 from 6 and Williams 15 from 22.
